How To Prevent Fraud On Your Checking Account

Authored By: MIT FCU

Fraud can strike when you least expect it—and your checking account is often a prime target. Luckily, a few simple habits can go a long way toward keeping your money safe. Here are three quick tips to help you stay a step ahead of scammers:

     1. Monitor your account regularly
Make it a habit to check your account activity at least a few times a week. The sooner you catch unfamiliar charges or suspicious withdrawals, the faster you can act. Most banking apps even let you set up alerts for unusual transactions—use them!

     2. Set up account alerts
Most banks will allow you to set up alerts such as text/email alerts for large transactions and unusual login notifications. This way, you're instantly notified if something seems off with your account. Getting to the root of the problem as soon as possible maximizes your chances of keeping your account safe.

     3. Be wary of phishing scams
Fraudsters often pose as banks or government agencies via email, text, or phone. Steer away from clicking suspicious links, downloading unknown attachments, or sharing account information with anyone who contacts you unsolicited.

Taking a few minutes now to lock down your account can save you a lot of stress later. Stay alert, stay smart, and stay protected!
